In the Shining the Light programs, Dr. King:
Shattering the Myths; Shining the Light: How to Spot Domestic Abuse before It Spirals Out of Control The most dangerous aspect of family violence is the set of myths surrounding it. This program shatters myths that haunt us in the home and taunt us in our communities, helping victims and assisting their advocates to better protect those in danger. Through real-life stories, Dr. King, sheds light on the psychosocial mechanisms that foster abuse beyond control and shows how to spot a dangerous relationship before it is too late. Bridging psychology and domestic abuse advocacy, Dr. King provides a conceptualization of battering as a psychosocial addiction to control. She gives a clear profile of the primary characteristics symptomatic of intimate partner violence, the signs and signals of battering and victimization, the relationship between spousal abuse, child abuse and intimate partner violence during pregnancy, and addresses the inner experience of living in a battering relationship. This program enhances the professional's ability to serve as a gatekeeper for domestic abuse in his/her community. |

The Three Keys to Shining the Light: How to Help Patients Spot Intimate Partner Violence How can you shine the light on the abuse cycle in order to facilitate change and restore healing for those you serve? Bridging clinical practice and domestic abuse advocacy, Dr. King offers the keys to shining the light on domestic abuse. This program provides insights and tools for accurately assessing intimate partner violence, and shows the subtle communication patterns of battering relationships. The Three Keys to Shining the Light focuses on the professional clinical issues most often missing in domestic abuse education. Dr. King shows how to overcome the barriers inherent in interfacing with psychosocial conditions and offers basic, psychotherapeutic strategies that facilitate change, empower patients and foster conscious choice. The lessons learned strengthen the healthcare and social service provider's ability to serve as a catalyst for domestic abuse intervention. |
Being in the Light: Three Pillars to Healing from Within Beyond battering, then what? Healing is the focus and result of this experiential program. This finely tuned therapeutic intervention successfully blends practices designed to foster self-repair and support the mind and body in healing pain, stress and emotional suffering. Dr. King shows how to rebuild from the inside out and rekindle physical and psychological integrity. Through stress-reduction and self-regulation training, participants move from self-limiting thoughts to clarity and inner truth; from physical distress and emotional turmoil to comfort, peace and purposeful, productive expression. Whether one is a survivor or advocate for survivors, the three pillars to healing from within have the potential to be life-enhancing skills practiced for health and well-being far beyond this program. |
